The quick answer
For most of the outback, the best time to visit is May to September. Days are warm rather than scorching, nights are cool and clear, and tours run at full schedule. The trade-off is that this is also peak season, so prices and crowds are highest.
Red Centre (Uluru, Kings Canyon, Alice Springs)
Between May and September daytime maximums at Uluru are usually 20–30°C, while winter nights can drop close to or below freezing. From October to March temperatures regularly exceed 35°C, and some walks — including the Kings Canyon Rim Walk — close from 9am on days forecast to hit 36°C or more.
Top End (Kakadu, Litchfield)
The Top End has two main seasons. The dry season (roughly May to October) brings sunny days and open roads to places like Jim Jim Falls. The wet season (roughly November to April) brings storms, flooded wetlands and dramatic waterfalls, but many roads and sites close. Kakadu's park pass drops to $25 in the wet.
Kimberley (Gibb River Road, Bungle Bungles)
Plan for May to September. The Gibb River Road and Purnululu National Park are generally only accessible in the dry season, and most tours don't run in the wet.
Outback South Australia and the Nullarbor
The Flinders Ranges, Coober Pedy and Lake Eyre are best from about March or April through October. Summer is very hot. On the Nullarbor, southern right whales gather at the Head of Bight from around June to October.
