Aboriginal Cultural Tours in the Outback

How to experience Aboriginal culture respectfully on an outback trip, from Uluru to Kakadu and Arnhem Land.

Why go with an Aboriginal guide

Aboriginal people have lived in the outback for more than 60,000 years. Guided tours led by Traditional Owners share stories, bush foods, art and law that you won't hear anywhere else — and your money supports local communities.

Where to go

  • Uluru: Anangu-guided walks, the Cultural Centre and dot-painting workshops at Ayers Rock Resort.
  • Kakadu: Ubirr and Burrungkuy rock art, and the Warradjan Cultural Centre near Cooinda.
  • Arnhem Land: a permit is required, so join a guided tour from Darwin or Jabiru.
  • Dampier Peninsula near Broome: Aboriginal-run tours focused on bush foods, fishing and country.
  • Flinders Ranges: tours with Adnyamathanha guides.

Visiting respectfully

  • Don't photograph signposted sensitive sites at Uluru.
  • Ask before photographing people.
  • Stay on marked paths and follow guides' instructions about sacred areas.
  • Buy art from community-owned art centres to ensure artists are paid fairly.
